Mick Mulveney has resigned as Envoy to Northern Ireland. That’s too bad. He should stay there and learn from people who know what happens when ideology overruns a nation’s ability to govern itself. Thanks to the tireless efforts of the disgraced former president and his media allies, we could use this information.
Ireland as a nation fought for and won their independence from the United Kingdom. A handful of northern counties remained loyal to the crown and Northern Ireland was partitioned. Irish Republicans formed a militia, the IRA, and for decades, used random acts of violence to destabilize the political system.
By his acts, and the refusal of his partisan backers to admit the truth and stop the incitement, Mr. Trump is dooming us to decades of political violence. They have so thoroughly brainwashed so many people that it is now virtually impossible to find and reach out to these lost souls. They will continue to nurse this grievance forever, and so now none of us our safe. As in Israel, or Central America, our nation is now host to our own version of the FARC or the PLA We can expect random mass shootings, pipe bombings, arson, and other pointless but deadly acts on the streets of America because they believe they are right, and the only people they trust to tell them the truth refuse to do so.
This will be all the more horrific because our nations insatiable desire for war making has trained tens of thousands of people in asymetrical warfare, and then abandoned them without adequate post service support. Plenty of your neighbors have assault weapons and huge caches of ammo. Many of them have been deeply radicalized by Mr Ailes’ unholy brainchild.
The current crisis will pass. But unless those who have sole influence over the hateful mob work quickly to diffuse this, we will never return to the status quo ante. Based on the direction of men like Cruz, Jordan, and Hawley, we must assume that that will never happen. They are already focused on 2022, we must treat them as the clear and present danger that they are. Their pleas to forgive and move on are strategic, not genuine. Let this moment pass, and we will never be safe at home again. Never.
