I was heartened to view the response of Taoiseach Leo Varadkar to the rioting in Dublin, Ireland last night.
Reports are that three children and one adult were attacked with a knife by a man who was subdued by persons nearby at the time. All five were being treated in the hospital at the time of my reading the reports.
Many thoughts came flooding into my head as I watched the various news reports online and on YouTube.
My first thought was what the carnage could have been like if the man had a firearm instead of a knife, because mass shootings here in the US are so frequent.
I looked closer into what the Irish and UK news says is the cause of the unrest and they say that local people are upset with immigrants seeking asylum and feel dispossessed of their place and jobs and feel forgotten. The news says the rioters are right wing extremists.
Another thing that stood out to me was the comment that Gardai responded from around the country to support the local law enforcement and that there were over 400 officers involved according to the Irish Times. It was interesting to me how they responded and seemed to herd the rioters and get control. In my opinion much different than what we see in this country.
