I know this is a pipe dream and most people could not afford it, but it would be interesting to see what would happen if everyone who is an immigrant, documented or undocumented, went on strike for one week. It would probably have more impact during the harvest season but imagine there being no one to pick fruits or vegetables. No one to clean hotel rooms or bus tables at restaurants. Noone to work construction projects. No one to maintain your lawns. No aides in hospitals to clean bedpans and bathe patients. Of course, there are also immigrants working as doctors and lawyers and computer scientists and engineers and they too should go on strike for a week. Probably many first responders, police, fire, FEMA are also immigrants.
There does not have to be a huge march or picket line. Just nobody showing up for a week. And it doesn’t matter if you have been in the country for 30 days or 30 years.
As the song goes, “you don’t know what you got till it's gone”.
And for all of those immigrants who took the time to become citizens and voted for Trump because they felt that they would be safe as citizens, just remember, that Jews who voted for Hitler in 1933 did not escape when he came for them in the late 30s and early 40s.
If they start rounding up people who look like they may be illegal immigrants how are you going to prove you are not. It will mean that Hispanic looking people will have to carry ID cards at all times and having a driver’s license won’t be sufficient since many undocumented people have drivers licenses. It will be like the Gestapo asking people for IDs and if they are not produced the people will be detained. I think Arizona tried that with sheriff Joe Arpaio and back then it was determined to be illegal. Under the new administration that technique will be rampant throughout the country. And what form of ID is going to be acceptable. Not everyone has a passport or a driver’s license. Is everyone who looks foriegn going to have to carry special papers? This is a very dangerious scenario and a lot of innocent and documented immigrants will be caught up in it.
will PS: No, I am not an immigrant, but my late father was, and he served his country in WWII and my wife’s late mother was an immigrant who came to this country alone at the age of 11 in 1933 after her mother sent her to American to live with an aunt in order to escape fascism in Hungary.
I owned a manufacturing business and over 75% of my employees were immigrants. If it were not for immigrants, the business would not have survived.
