Open thread for night owls: Few Republicans willing to meet with children their bill may uninsure

Timmy Morrison, age 6, arrived this morning at the Capitol with his mother and two other families to lobby the Senate.

Timmy has a deeply personal stake in the health care debate, which could come to a Senate vote as early as next week, even though Republican leaders still have not released the text of their bill. He was born seven weeks premature and spent the first six months of his life in the hospital. He still has significant health issues due to a rare genetic disease. He has been under anesthesia more than 45 times.

Before Obamacare, many health insurance plans (including Timmy’s) had lifetime coverage limits. They would cap how much one person could spend on medical care, often at $1 million.

Obamacare banned those limits six days before Timmy was born. He went on to spend more than $2 million during his first hospital stay.

Republicans typically say they support leaving this ban in place. Still, the House-passed American Health Care Act would allow big employers to reinstitute lifetime limits.

While the families were able to meet with several Democratic senators, efforts to meet Republican senators were less successful.

If the ban on lifetime insurance limits is indeed repealed, whether Timmy and other children with expensive ongoing needs would be cared for or uninsured would lie with the companies that employ each of their parents. Whether or not this notion is too barbaric to return to is, behind closed doors and out of the view of the families, currently being debated.

BLAST FROM THE PAST

At on this date in 2007—How much of a prick is Rudy Giuliani?

How much of a prick is Rudy Giuliani? So much that he basically got fired from the Iraq Study Group by James Baker because he never went to any of the meetings.

And where was he instead? Cashing in on his 9/11 celebrity, giving motivational speeches for an organization called Life Win, Inc., which puts on "Get Motivated" (!) seminars all over the country.

You know the drill. Big stage show. Big music. Big lights. Big name celeb tells you to reach for your dreams. Big charge on your credit card.

How big? Big enough to pay Rudy a hundred grand per appearance (he did two while he was supposed to be at ISG meetings).

You know, for a war we got into (and an occupation we continue -- maybe for 50 years) because people like Giuliani told America Iraq was connected to the World Trade Center attack, you'd think the decent thing for Giuliani to do would be to drop his 9/11 grave robbing for a while and see what he could contribute to getting us the hell out of this mess.

On today’s Kagro in the Morning show, Greg Dworkin marks the solstice with the hottest takes on GA-06, and parsing the “Trump Base.” Joan McCarter is, of course, entirely consumed by the health care tax bill & its secret process. If only aggrieved Gop Senators could find a way to change that... x Embedded Content
