We are at least 7 messages (the minimum to make a pattern) and $289 short for this quilt — I will keep these numbers updated.
BFSkinner was one of the first recipients of a community quilt...number 6, actually, in 2009. The reason was lupus, a disease that was, distressingly, affecting the cognition of this very brilliant and successful psychologist. Since then, he’s been in the hospital more times than we can count, in very fragile condition but full of fight to survive. His quilt has been a big, big support to him in his struggles. He wrote to me:
Would it be possible to request another quilt? The one I have has been used so much and kept me sane during my numerous hospitalizations. So much has changed since then that I would love another, if I can make such a request.
BFSkinner’s Community Quilt #6, from 2009Hell yes, we will make him a quilt! Since 2009, he has made lots of new friends who have followed his charming diaries about music and popular culture. As ill as BFSkinner has been, he has always been a person who uplifts those around him. Now we get a second “quilty” chance to do the same for him.
If you are unfamiliar with community quilts, these are a type of “friendship” quilt bearing loving messages from you, transcribed by me in archival ink on muslin. Then my sister and I sew the messages into something colorful, warm, and radiating with community support. This is something that BFSkinner will wrap up in whenever he feels alone or full of hurt. It is a way his blog friends can be with him, always.
It takes time and material to make a community quilt and it is a living for me and my sister. If you would like to contribute toward BFSkinner’s quilt, here is a PayPal link— or message me for an address if you prefer a check. $20/message is suggested by no worries if you cannot afford to donate. We still want your message! This is a crowdfunded thing and some always give more to cover messages for those who are short on funds.
