Billy Joel wears big Star of David onstage at Madison Square Garden to protest white supremacy

Last night, at Madison Square Garden (MSG), local kid Billy Joel performed a concert for fans. During his encore set, Joel came out wearing a very prominent Star of David.

And on the day of the Solar Eclipse a yellow star appeared on the jacket of another kind of star with a clinched fist that seemed to be gripping painful, no excruciating, memories of loved ones who wore that star to their death. May that star also remind you today of the gold stars pinned to the jackets of soldiers for their bravery and valor for fighting an evil so hideous even the gold stars in the sky were afraid to shine. AM New York explains that anti-Semitism and neo-Nazis are a particularly personal matter for the piano man.

For his entire four-song encore, Joel wore a bright yellow Star of David on the front and back of his black suit. Cheers went up in the crowd when a close-up of Joel wearing the symbol was shown on the main video screen.

The subject is close to Joel’s heart, considering how many of his relatives died in the Holocaust and how his paternal grandfather Karl Joel had to flee Nazi Germany in 1938, eventually settling in America after living in Switzerland and Cuba.
