Received this e-mail today from U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D. NV) in support of U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren’s (D. MA) re-election campaign:
Yesterday, a U.S. District Court ruled in favor of Donald Trump and Mick Mulvaney’s hijacking of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Budget Director Mulvaney – a former Tea Partier who once called the CFPB a "sick, sad joke" and vowed to destroy it – is now the man leading it.
Let’s be honest: As soon as Richard Cordray, the former director of the CFPB, stepped down, we knew Donald Trump would shift his efforts to gut the CFPB into high gear. And one of the first targets he’s looking to get rid of is the woman who built it – Senator Elizabeth Warren. Elizabeth is up for reelection in 2018, and right-wing special interests are already running ads against her. Now, this is where we come in!
The recession of 2008 – caused in large part by the predatory lending practices of the Big Banks – destroyed American families. People lost their homes, retirement accounts and decades’ worth of savings.
Elizabeth fought tooth-and-nail to help families get the relief they deserved and worked to ensure no family could ever fall victim to the Big Banks’ ridiculous, predatory behavior again. This all happened through the CFPB Elizabeth built to keep the Big Banks in check and ensure they’re held accountable. Since forming, the CFPB has delivered nearly $12 billion in relief to 29 million Americans cheated by Big Banks. But the GOP’s working to dismantle it, and the first person they want to get rid of in that effort is Elizabeth.
Elizabeth is one of our strongest voices in the Senate and one of my biggest allies – that’s why I need you to step up today: Can you give $5 or more right now to send Elizabeth back to the Senate to keep fighting to protect the CFPB?
While Donald Trump continues to attack Elizabeth with disgusting racial slurs, I know this team will continue to stand up and speak out to support her. And while Trump continues to attack American families, let’s step up to ensure we keep Elizabeth fighting for them in the Senate.
