Special Elections Calendar: Happy New Year 2018 Edition

Coming off our stunning successes in 2017, let’s dive right into 2018 with no less enthusiasm!

As usual, this special elections calendar includes special elections to the U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives, and all state legislative chambers.  For convenience, it also includes mayoral (or equivalent) elections for major cities.

New picture up top — an official DKE tally of which party controls which legislative chambers.  As you can see...not much blue, lots of red.  Let’s change this so that there’s more blue.

This calendar will be occasionally updated (or superseded with a newer version if comments get closed), as new information arrives.  Newer versions will have a link at the top.  If you've got more information to add or clarify anything, please comment and I'll edit it in or include it in a future edition of this calendar.

SUMMARY

Election descriptions will be listed under the date of the general or jungle primary election.  National-level races are bold in this summary.  Due to the nature of special elections, not much information is available more than a few months in advance.

LEGEND/TERMINOLOGY

[p] = primary election.  general elections are not marked. [p/50%] = whoever wins 50%+1 wins the nomination.  (Other numbers may be used as needed.) [jp] = jungle primary. [jp/50%] = jungle primary, and whoever wins 50%+1 wins the seat. [r] = runoff. [(r)] = runoff if necessary, but may be averted by someone who gets enough votes the first round. [rc] = recall election.  These may follow different rules depending on the state. (np) = no party labels on the ballot for candidates in this election (a.k.a. “non-partisan”).  Depending on local laws, this may also mean that candidates aren’t allowed to identify their partisan affiliation (though election observers like us certainly can). (nD) = no Democrats filed for this election. (aD) = all candidates in this election are Democrats. (uD) = unopposed Democrat.  Election will still be held, as write-ins might still qualify. Seats with Republican (prior) incumbents are underlined (opportunities to flip seats, or “offense”). Seats with Democratic (prior) incumbents are italicized (seats we need to hold, or “defense”).
